Student Poems 09/10

By Shaunna and Bekkie

We got kicked out of school

and that wans't cool

Then we came to Smart

and now we take part

We went on the residential

and found out potential

Our group is green

and we are not mean

We've learnt our maths

and now we have paths

In school we had one wish

to be better at English

Now we've had an opportunity

to be more like me

Kim does cooking class

I think I might pass

On Monday we have a team meeting

On Thursday we have healthy eating

Lindsey's always there

when we do childcare

Making positive changes

stops us getting into dangers

Art is a choice

Now raise your voice

Smart is the place to be

And now we've got to go

because it's five to three

Mechanics 09

Since the start of the year, 4 of our students(Ben, Nick, Karl & Dillon)have been working with a mechanic in Ponthenri, Paul Rowlands of Service 2 U, to learn mechanic skills. They have been doing very well and 2 of them have now applied to college in Carmarthen for the mechanics course.

Cookery 09

Here are some examples of the amazing dishes being produced by our cookery students this year. Well done to Beefy, Victoria, Kirsty, Charlotte, Steven and Nikitaa for the great work. They are about to embark on our master chef competition so good luck to them all. Three of our cookery students have already applied for catering college next year, so look out Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey!!!

This poem was written by Rob Rees, Smart Project student of 08/09, we love it!!

Some people said I would never achieve.

My friends at SMART would always believe.

Always people used to put me down.

Round the corner people made me frown.

Trust is something that I have found!

Thank you SMART!

Princes Trust Heritage Project

Over the past few months we have been working with the Princes Trust on a Heritage Project. We have been putting together information, film and photos and art work about the Princes Trust and Llanellis history. All of our work will be exhibited in the Millenium Centre in Cardiff on the 18th and 19th of June, anyone is welcome to come along and have a look. We will be going along on the 19th. Here are some examples of the graffiti art work completed by us.

Junior Sports Leader Award

Five of our students have been working towards this certificate since the start of the Spring term. They are working with Hefin and Richie from Youth Services and Mark and Jock from Smart. The course is designed to build the confidence of the young people, bring out and develop their leadership skills and to improve their communication and ability to plan. They have been taking part in practical and theory sessions each week at Trimsaran Leisure Centre where they have been able to learn their new skills, and are currently working weekly with the pupils of Trimsaran Primary School to put their skills into practice by planning and taking sessions with the pupils on their own.

Pottery

Recently the students took part in some pottery sessions with Yoka from Siramik. Yoka taught the students (and staff) to use a potters wheel to produce pots and vases, as well as making masks and plaques. The sessions went very well and we all had a good laugh trying to control our clay.
