Key Skills

These 6 qualifications are accredited by ASDAN and achievable at levels 1 and 2. They cover the following areas:-

  • Communication – looking at verbal and written forms of communicating.
  • Application of number – looking at using maths in every day life.
  • Information technology – looking at using IT in all areas of our lives.
  • Problem solving – looking at different ways of finding solutions to problems.
  • Working with Others – looking at how to work as a team and on a one-to-one basis.
  • Improving own learning and performance – looking at how we plan and work towards achieving our goals.

All students will have the opportunity to do the 6 Key Skills at level 1, however those who are able may do any at level 2. They are all achieved through portfolio building.

 

Princes Trust xl Club Award

This award is accredited by ASDAN and is achievable at bronze, silver and gold levels. Students will all achieve bronze level and then are able to choose to progress onto silver or gold level. Again they are achieved through portfolios of evidence. The sections covered by this award are:-

  • Personal, Interpersonal and Team Work – the students get to look at themselves and their beliefs and goals, learn how to work well with other people and about the value of team work.
  • Citizenship and Community Awareness - students will look at what it is to be part of a community, the differences between people in the community and how to be a valuable citizen.
  • Community Project – students will have the opportunity to give something back to the community by taking part in projects such as keeping the local area tidy, working with younger children/the elderly in the area or contributing to larger community projects.
  • Residential – at the start of the year students will have the opportunity to attend an overnight residential where they will overcome fears, gain in confidence, work as a team and have many new experiences. Later in the year some of the students will have the opportunity to go on a longer residential.
  • Entrepreneurship and Enterprise – in this section students will learn about how to raise money for charity or for something to do with the project. We will use the fund raising ideas of the students and work through the whole process from the ideas stage, allocating job roles, the event and the reviewing process.
  • Preparing for the world of work – in this section the students will learn how to search for and apply for jobs, create a CV, will experience a mock interview and work with careers officers to help them move forward into jobs or further training. Students will also have the opportunity to take part in extended work experience.

 

Youth Achievement Award

This award is given by Youth Cymru, UK Youth and accredited by ASDAN for completion of 4 activities of 15 or more hours each. Again achieved through portfolio building the activities can link with those from other awards and are chosen by the students. This award is achieved at bronze level.

 

Certificate in Life Skills

ASDAN

Again accredited by ASDAN this certificate is achieved at level 2. It is achieved through class work, portfolio building and an assessment at the end of the year. It increases the students awareness of the local area, increases their skills and prepares them for independent living. The sections it covers are:-

  • Community
  • World of work
  • Citizenship
  • ICT
  • Home management
  • Personal Care

 

Pacific Institute, Go For It!

Pacific Institute

This award is given by the Pacific Institute. The course is achieved through work book completion, practical activities and discussion. It is designed to raise the students self esteem and confidence, increase awareness of their own views, beliefs and values and help them to set achievable goals for the future.

 

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Duke of Edinburghs Award

This award is gained at bronze level, and can be completed solely through practical activities, chosen by the students. The sections it covers are:-

  • Service – looking at how the students can serve the community.
  • Skills – looking at how the students gain and improve their skills in a chosen area.
  • Physical Recreation – looking at the students increasing skills and fitness through a chosen sport or activity.
  • Expedition – looking at the students demonstrating self sufficiency and leadership during overnight residentials.

 

Junior Sports Leader Award

This award is run in partnership with the Youth Service and is given by QCA and Sports Leader UK. Through practical activities and class based sessions the students learn how to coach younger children in indoor, potted sports. This includes learning about health and safety, fair play and how to referee, putting together session plans and including warm up and cool down sessions. The course ends with the students planning and running sports sessions with children from the local primary school. This course is designed not only to teach the students about coaching but also to raise their confidence and planning skills for the future.
